Departing after brunch through the quilt-like fields, we will ride along a prehispanic trail to Piuray Lake. Around 1534, the conquistador Gonzalo Pizarro ransacked Huchuy Qosqo. The site’s main features include a series of temples, plazas, and storage buildings. We will have lunch in the Sacred Valley, then carry on along the riverside to meet our transport near the town of Urquillos to return to your hotel.

Wakrapukara & Acomayo Canyon

Intermediate

4 days

from USD 1680 /pax (min 2)

1 rider – 3460 US$/pax 2 riders – 2180 US$/pax 3-5 riders – 1980 US$/pax 6-10 riders – 1680 US$/pax

Explore one of the deepest canyon regions in the Andes, on horseback. This route enters the little-visited area surrounding the Acomayo Canyon and Waqrapukara, an Inca ceremonial complex built after the incorporation of the Kanas people. Positioned on the canyon edge, Waqrapukara overlooks a sequence of mountain ranges and large rock formations that frame the Apurímac River valley.
The expedition begins at Pomacanchi with the Circuit of the Four Lagoons, then continues into the canyon to visit several Inca archaeological sites.

Day 1: Depart Cusco or the Sacred Valley at 7:30am and enjoy lunch by Pomacanchi before riding through the four southern highland lagoons: Pomacanchi, Acopia, Asnaqocha, and Pampamarca. At 3,700 m, the route crosses puna, farmland, and quiet Andean communities. Expect birdlife, wetlands, traditional reed boats, and beautiful shifting landscapes across these culturally significant lakes.

Day 2: Our second riding day continues south toward the Acomayo Canyon, following rural tracks that gradually descend from the high-altitude lagoon region into more sheltered terrain. We enter the canyon through a narrow corridor carved by erosion and seasonal river flow, revealing the layered rock formations of the Acomayo basin. Midway, we visit the Inca site of Llanquepata, with terraces, foundations, and lookout points along the canyon walls. The ride then continues along the valley floor to Huascar, where we overnight in a comfortable local guesthouse set among farmland and the lower canyon slopes.

Day 3: From Huascar, after a simple morning of milking the cow at our cozy guesthouse, we ride toward the high mesas and ridgelines leading to Waqrapukara, an Inca ceremonial complex overlooking the Apurímac canyon. The ascent follows traditional herding paths across open puna with views of distinctive eroded rock formations. At Waqrapukara, we explore its carved terraces, retaining walls, platforms, and surrounding stone outcrops shaped by wind and weather. After the visit, we return to Huascar along a local track for a second comfortable overnight in the community.

Day 4:

Our final riding day follows ancestral paths that traverse the middle and lower sections of the Acomayo Canyon, linking small agricultural zones, irrigation channels, and long-used crossing points along the canyon walls. We continue toward Huayqui, where the ride concludes and our support team meets the horses. From Huayqui, we return to Huascar for a farewell dinner at the local lodge before starting the drive back to Cusco or the Sacred Valley. The journey ends with an overnight at your hotel in Cusco.
