3-Day Itinerary:
Day 1: We will begin our journey at 9am (earlier pickup), at our basecamp in Munaypata, Ollantaytambo, Sacred Valley of the Inkas. Departing, we will ride up to visit the Inkan outpost at Pumamarka, with its incredible lookout. Then we will enjoy lunch in Huilloc Village. Passing through the fields of Pallata and Huilloc villages, we will ride along a prehispanic road to the village of Patacancha, a native Andean community which maintains a lifestyle said to be “as close to that of the Inkas” as still exists in the Sacred Valley. The village has worked in community-based tourism for over 10 years and offers excellent workshops on its local culture. Tonight we will stay in the family-run lodge. The rustic lodge offers extra comforts while maintaining the authenticity of mountain family life. This project has given the Quispe Huaman family in Patacancha the opportunity to create their own hospitality business. The upgraded lodge boasts private bathrooms and down comforters.

Day 2: After breakfast, we will learn about Andean textiles with the women of the Quispe Huaman family, and the brothers will teach us how to weave a thatched straw roof. At 10 am, we will set off riding and we will cross the high pass and ride past snow-capped mountains and tranquil lakes, directing our horses towards the tiny highland communities of Chalwaycocha and Ipsaycocha(4450m) to have lunch overlooking the lake, with the villagers. Following lunch, we will drop down a steep trail to the small town of Huacahuasi, whose main sustenance is potato farming and alpaca husbandry. We will rest at our second comfortable women-run lodge, the home of the Mayo Sullca family.

Day 3: On the final day of riding, we will start our descent at 9 am down to Lares Hot Springs. We will ride through the stone villages and follow the Incan trail along the river. We will have lunch in a family home in the community of Tamboaylla. After lunch, we ride right to the famous, natural baths of Lares Hot Springs. Make sure to bring your bathing suit! We will enjoy lots of time for a relaxing soak. In Lares, we will say farewell to our noble horses. Our driver will pick us up after we enjoy the hot springs, to drive down the spectacular valley to return to your hotel or carry on to Ollantaytambo if you choose to visit Machu Picchu the following day.

Wakrapukara & Acomayo Canyon

Intermediate

4 days

from USD 1820 /pax

1 rider – 3460 US$/pax 2 riders – 2680 US$/pax 3-5 riders – 2080 US$/pax 6-10 riders – 1820 US$/pax

Explore one of the deepest canyon regions in the Andes, on horseback. This route enters the little-visited area surrounding the Acomayo Canyon and Waqrapukara, an Inca ceremonial complex built after the incorporation of the Kanas people. Positioned on the canyon edge, Waqrapukara overlooks a sequence of mountain ranges and large rock formations that frame the Apurímac River valley.
The expedition begins at Pomacanchi with the Circuit of the Four Lagoons, then continues into the canyon to visit several Inca archaeological sites.

Day 1: Depart Cusco or the Sacred Valley at 7:30am and enjoy lunch by Pomacanchi before riding through the four southern highland lagoons: Pomacanchi, Acopia, Asnaqocha, and Pampamarca. At 3,700 m, the route crosses puna, farmland, and quiet Andean communities. Expect birdlife, wetlands, traditional reed boats, and beautiful shifting landscapes across these culturally significant lakes.

Day 2: Our second riding day continues south toward the Acomayo Canyon, following rural tracks that gradually descend from the high-altitude lagoon region into more sheltered terrain. We enter the canyon through a narrow corridor carved by erosion and seasonal river flow, revealing the layered rock formations of the Acomayo basin. Midway, we visit the Inca site of Llanquepata, with terraces, foundations, and lookout points along the canyon walls. The ride then continues along the valley floor to Huascar, where we overnight in a comfortable local guesthouse set among farmland and the lower canyon slopes.

Day 3: From Huascar, after a simple morning of milking the cow at our cozy guesthouse, we ride toward the high mesas and ridgelines leading to Waqrapukara, an Inca ceremonial complex overlooking the Apurímac canyon. The ascent follows traditional herding paths across open puna with views of distinctive eroded rock formations. At Waqrapukara, we explore its carved terraces, retaining walls, platforms, and surrounding stone outcrops shaped by wind and weather. After the visit, we return to Huascar along a local track for a second comfortable overnight in the community.

Day 4:

Our final riding day follows ancestral paths that traverse the middle and lower sections of the Acomayo Canyon, linking small agricultural zones, irrigation channels, and long-used crossing points along the canyon walls. We continue toward Huayqui, where the ride concludes and our support team meets the horses. From Huayqui, we return to Huascar for a farewell dinner at the local lodge before starting the drive back to Cusco or the Sacred Valley. The journey ends with an overnight at your hotel in Cusco.
